My name is Bob Becker. For 30 years I was Sports Editor of the Grand Rapids Press.
Now that I am retired I have been devoting a great deal of my time to veterans’ issues. As a trustee for Walter Durkee American Legion Post 311, I am in charge of establishing Legion Flight 311, a project designed to send West Michigan’s World War II veterans to see their monument in Washington D.C. Legion Flight 311 is a local organization and is not connected in any way to the Honor Flight Network.
NOTE*
Over the past 11 months, Legion Flight 311 has taken 150 World War II veterans and their escorts to Washington D.C.
The Oct. 19 flight was the last Legion Fight. Funding was available for only the three flights we were able to put together, and we are grateful to the many individuals and military groups who donated to make these trips possible.
If you are interested in a future flight, please contact Honor Flight headquarters in Springfield, Ohio.
On this web site you will find a nomination form for World War II veterans to make the trip. Veterans will not be charged to take part.
There is also a Guardian volunteer form. Guardians MUST be veterans or active duty personnel, and will take the trip and act as guides and companions to the WWII vets who will go. Guardians must provide their own $300 fee to cover expenses for flight, bus tour of Washington, t-shirt and meals. Priority will be given to named Guardians for specific veterans, though applications will also be taken from veterans who want to accompany any at-large veteran.
WWII nominations and Guardian nominations must be accompanied by a signed indemnity form.
If you want to volunteer to help in the Legion Flight organization, in fund-raising, clerical duties, setting up the return home welcoming ceremony, etc., there is a form for you as well. Although we have been blessed by the generous help from Breton Village Travel to set up plane and bus reservations, countless clerical and planning duties need to be fulfilled.
Any and all volunteer help will be appreciated.
You can also help by making a donation. Legion Flight must raise approximately $9,000 per flight to pay for the veterans we are honoring.
If you have a veteran in your family….especially if someone you know or loved served in World War II…you can honor that memory by making a donation to Legion Flight 311 in that veteran’s name.
Not only will you honor the service of your veterans, you will also be honoring the brothers and sisters in arms who fought and won World Wars on two fronts. We are losing them at the rate of 1,000 per day, so your donations will be greatly appreciated and help us take as many of our local veterans to Washington as possible.
Checks can be mailed to: Legion Flight 311, 4144 Cannon Hills Ct, NE, Ada MI 49503.
